The Labour Story
Thursday night I was getting ready for bed when I experienced severe lower back pain. At first I thought I was in labour but soon realised that it wasn't and I had done something to my back. So I went to bed with a heat back and panadol and tried to get a little bit of sleep. Through the night I could hardly walk to go to the toilet and by the next morning my right leg had pins and needles down it and it was numb to touch. Not being able to cope with the pain any more I went up to the maternity ward to see if I could get some pain relief. They decided to break my waters and then the contractions started. Just under four hours later I gave birth to our beautiful baby boy. The next day my leg and back were still really bad so I had CT scan of my back and found that I had a prolapsed disc in my lower back. The Neurosurgeon ordered some pain relief etc and said that it should resolve itself and that I was to see him in a month. I was discharged on the Tuesday, read my CT report when I got home and decided to see my GP on the Wednesday for a second opinion and also because the pain was getting worse. He admitted me back into hospital that day and I saw an Orthopedic surgeon that night. Thursday I had a MRI, Friday I had a discograpghy (contrast injected into the disc space in my spine) which found that I had 3 bad discs that needed to be replaced. Basically a bad outcome and they called the surgery off which was to take place Friday afternoon. They called the surgery off because it was going to be more complex, they needed more time to plan and prepare, more gear was needed and we had a pretty big decision to make. The decision being - option 1: replace two discs and fuse the 3rd (this would be the best option) but the problem being that we would be out off pocket approx $80,000! Yes I have the correct amount of zero's!! Medicare and my private health fund will only cover one disc and the second one costs that much. Option 2: Replace 1 disc and fuse the 2nd and 3rd. The down fall with this option being that the stuff that they put in to fuse them would draw all the nutrients out of my body and the fact that I am breast feeding my body probably wouldn't be able to cope with it all. But the biggest problem was if they didn't operate I could have had permanent damage and numbness in my lower back and right leg. So after calling the surgery off, they then decided 15 minutes later that they would do a discectomy (remove the prolapsed disc) and then we could plan another operation in the near future. So I had the operation and now I am recovering with a 10cm long wound down my back, not being able to lift, bend forward or drive for 6 weeks. So it wasn't the way that I thought I would be bringing our new baby home but at least we are home now and enjoying being a family of 5.
Happy Days!
